Youth Services
Second Chance offers comprehensive services to girls at risk of being victims of domestic sex trafficking and girls who have been victimized by domestic sex trafficking. There are no fees for girls to participate in the Second Chance Program. All services are free for girls.
Second Chance develops individualized service plans for each girl involved in programming. Plans are modeled on treatment and recovery practices that support girls in healing from trauma, learning and developing a strong sense of self, and challenging and engaging girls to develop healthy and authentic relationships.
Current Services Provided Include:
- Intensive Case Management
- Advocacy
- Information and Referral Services
- Education and Prevention
- Trauma Treatment through Individual Counseling
- Psychosocial Groups and Educational Groups
- Support groups for victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC)
Services for girls are provided at Second Chance and also at Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center. Once a week Second Chance staff run an educational and prevention group for all girls staying at Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Second Chance believes that children do not choose to be prostitutes. They are victims of abuse and domestic sex trafficking under federal legislation, and should be treated as such. Children who are victims of sex trafficking suffer severe abuse and exploitation both at hands of traffickers (pimps) and sexual predators (traditionally referred to as johns or customers). Second Chance believes that no child who is a victim of sex trafficking should be incarcerated and charged with prostitution or other related crimes. Unfortunately, this is still the case in Toledo and throughout much of the United States.
Safe House
In 2006 the Prostitution Roundtable identified that children who are victims of domestic sex trafficking have no residential program in Toledo which provides services specific to their needs. Since 2006 Second Chance has been working to make this need a reality for girls who are victims of sex trafficking. Second Chance is anticipating the opening on their Safe House in August 2008.
