Toledo, Ohio has been cited by the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Youth as a major recruitment area for sex trafficking by pimps. While no one knows the exact number of children who are trafficked from Toledo, a study by the University of Toledo indicated that out of 250 women interviewed who reported participating in prostitution as an adult, almost half of these women were trafficked as children. Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery which occurs throughout the world, including in the United States. Human trafficking is a growing criminal industry and is now tied with arms dealing globally, as the second largest criminal industry. Victims are trafficked for a variety of reasons, including sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Sex trafficking victims are trafficked to be used for sexual purposes and can be forced to sell |

their bodies in brothel settings, at truck stops or on the streets, among other avenues. Sex trafficking victims can be children or adults and are commonly girls and women. While some people may be aware that international victims are trafficked into the United States, many people are not aware that United States citizens are being trafficked within the United States. |
